Your Weekly Soul Pause
A few moments each week to return to your Spiritual Heart, nourish your Soul Cup, and let your Inner Sparkle shine.
Hello Beautiful Soul,
As we begin November, a month traditionally associated with giving thanks, I’ve been reflecting on how my understanding of gratitude has changed throughout my life.
I’ve come to realize that, for me, there’s a difference between gratitude and genuine gratitude.
Gratitude can be an attitude of politeness, something we’re taught to express. But genuine gratitude? That’s something I experience much deeper within my Soul. It’s a feeling of love, appreciation, and connection that I can actually feel within my being.
And I’ve noticed that as I’ve grown older, my understanding and experience of gratitude have evolved right along with me.
How My Gratitude Has Evolved
When I was younger, I was grateful for the things I’d been taught to appreciate. Having a roof over my head. Food on the table. Clothes to wear. And enough money to pay the bills each month. And believe me, there were times when being able to pay those bills was something to be very grateful for!
As life became more financially comfortable, I found myself being grateful for not having to struggle quite so much. But looking back, some of the most meaningful gifts in my life came during those earlier years.
I remember when Geoff and I didn’t have much money for Christmas gifts for our growing family. So I made homemade gifts, including sugar cookies with lots and lots of buttercream frosting!
I’d been baking sugar cookies with my children since they were little. And when they were teenagers living in Las Vegas while Geoff and I lived in Colorado, I’d bake their favorite cookies and ship them off for Christmas.
Today, my children are grown, with children of their own, and they still love it when I make those homemade cookies. And now, I’ve carried that tradition into my life as Memaw.
When I visit my grandchildren, we bake something yummy together. I get them involved, and we have fun creating something delicious while making memories.
What began as a simple homemade gift has become a tradition filled with love, connection, and heartfelt memories. And today, I’m genuinely grateful for those experiences. Not because of what the gifts cost, but because of the love we shared in creating and giving them.
When Gratitude Becomes Something Deeper
As I’ve grown older and deepened my spiritual practices, I’ve noticed another shift. I’m no longer simply grateful for the things I have or the comforts I’ve experienced.
I’m becoming more grateful for meaningful experiences, conversations, connections, and even the situations that invite me to see life differently.
Sometimes, when I’m experiencing something challenging or interacting with someone whose perspective is different from mine, I find myself asking:
“What can I be grateful for in this situation?”
Or,
“Is there another way I can choose to see this person or experience?”
And when I allow myself to become curious and see something from a different perspective, something shifts within me. I may discover a greater understanding, compassion, or appreciation that I hadn’t recognized before.
And that’s when I experience what I call genuine gratitude.
It’s not about pretending everything is wonderful or ignoring the challenges I experience. It’s about recognizing that I have a choice in how I perceive and experience my life.
Through the years, I’ve noticed that as my gratitude has deepened, so has my sense of peace, joy, and love. I experience it as a higher resonance within my being, a feeling that comes from deep within my Soul. And I’m realizing that gratitude isn’t simply about what I’m thankful for.
It’s also about how I choose to see and experience the life I’m living.
What a beautiful thing to discover as we continue growing, learning, and becoming!
